Read my story “Robbie Can’t Dance” online

My science fiction short story “Robbie Can’t Dance” is now live on Cosmos magazine’s Web site!

I’ve got plenty of other projects on the go, some of which I can’t tell you about just yet… in the meantime, though: I’m proud to have a short story in the forthcoming unofficial Doctor Who charity anthology Seasons of War.

Hi Kate, I finally was able to break free long enough to get to your story. I wish I had been able to get to it sooner as it is just great. I don’t know how you are able to condense so much story into such limited time/space as the short story format allows. As far as what your story draws out…I dread the thought of the political fear mongering and social strife that the shift in societal perceptions toward and acceptance of robots and AI is going to most definitely generate. I predict it will make all the hate and pain that race and sexual relations has stained our species with seem like schoolyard scuffles in comparison. Your story magically exploits the undertones of these dawning fears and phobias, wrapping them around a most believable unbelievable love story,

Glad to have been introduced to your work, Kate. Much respect for all you’ve accomplished.

“Break free”! I’ve just done exactly that and can thank you for your kind praise at last. 🙂 When it comes to AIs, it may be a long time before we can create one that’s sophisticated enough that it can suffer. But if that does happen – I always think with a shiver of Guinan’s talk with Picard in “Measure of a Man”, a favourite Star Trek episode of mine, where she refers to “whole generations of disposable people”.

        Thanks again,
        – Kate
